Academy Awards atau disebut juga piala Oscar merupakan sebuah penghargaan film paling terutama di Amerika Serikat. Piala Oscar ini diberikan oleh Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, sebuah organisasi penghormatan profesional yang hingga 2003 mempunyai keanggotaan pemilih sebanyak 5.816. Aktor-aktor (dengan keanggotaan sebesar 1.311) merupakan kelompok pemilih terbesar.
Piala Academy Award ini dijuluki Oscar ketika seorang pustakawan Academy Margaret Herrick melihatnya di sebuah meja dan mengatakan, "kelihatan persis seperti pamanku Oscar!". Nama tersebut tetap melekat dan hingga kini digunakan seumum nama Academy Award sendiri, bahkan oleh pihak Academy sendiri. Bahkan situs web Academy berada pada oscars.org dan situs web Penghargaan Academy Awards berada pada oscars.com.
Penghargaan Oscar tersebut pertama kali diberikan pada 16 Mei 1929 namun hasilnya sebenarnya telah dimumkan pada 18 Februari, tiga bulan sebelumnya. Dan penyerahan Piala Oscar pun dilangsungkan setiap tahunnya hingga saat ini.
Piala Oscar itu sendiri memiliki tinggi 33,75 cm dan berat empat kilogram. Biaya untuk pembuatan satu piala itu sekitar 400 dollar AS. Piala tersebut dibuat dari bahan baja yang dicampur dengan britanium lalu disepuh dengan emas 24 karat. Sebanyak 50 buah piala itu sebelumnya telah dipamerkan di Times Square, New York, Amerika Serikat beberapa waktu lalu.
Tanggal 5 Maret 2006 mendatang, merupakan saat yang dinanti-nantikan oleh para insan perfilman Hollywood. Sebab pada tanggal tersebut akan terpilih beberapa orang yang layak untuk mendapatkan penghargaan terbaik pada tahun ini dalam The 78th Annual Academy Awards.
Acara penyerahan ini sendiri akan diadakan di Kodak Theathre, Hollywood, California, Amerika Serikat dimana lokasinya terletak dipersimpangan Hollywood Boulevard dan Highland Avenue. Tempat tersebut juga terdapat sebuah hotel yang didalamnya terdapat daerah bagi para pers yang dapat menampung sekitar 1500 jurnalis dan terdapat Grand Ballroom seluas 40.000 persegi yang telah di pesan oleh Wolfgang Puck.
Kodak Theatre itu sendiri dapat berkapasitas 3.400 orang dengan tiga buah balkon sehingga membuat hadirin dapat melihat lebih dekat ke panggung. Balkon tersebut lebarnya sekitar 113 kaki dan tinggi 60 kaki. Dan disana juga terdapat 24 kotak teater dengan empat hingga enam buah tempat duduk masing-masingnya.
Telah terpilih beberapa nama yang masuk ke dalam nominasi untuk Oscar tahun 2006 ini. Mereka akan bersaing dalam memperebutkan piala bergengsi ini untuk menjadi yang terbaik.

INDOSIAR, saya ngerti kalo anda susah bersusah payah menayangkan oscars secara EXCLUSIVE (live gitu lho, ampe gak ada subtitlenya- belom sempet ya mbak? ), tapi bo, tetep deh gue bangunnya kesiangan, jadi PLEASE tayangin ulang dong..... soalnya gue gak sempet liat RED CARPET MOMENTS-nya, jadi TUUUUOOLONG YA, tayangin ulang. Gue yakin INDOSIAR bakal tayangin ulang soalnya bbrp taon lalu INDOSIAR juga nayangin ulang grammys, so please ya weekend juga gpp kok, yang penting lengkap dari ARRIVALS sampe main show. TX luv ya
